Marrakech is said to awaken all the senses. Whether it's seeing the intricate zellige tilework, smelling the spices sold in the souks, hearing the call to prayer from nearby mosques, touching the supple leather used to craft babouches (leather sandals), or tasting a flavorful tagine – Marrakech never fails to captivate. Located just west of the Atlas Mountains, the city has been inhabited by Berber farmers for centuries. It is often called the "Ochre City" because of the red sandstone buildings and the red city walls that now enclose the Medina, home to Jemaa el-Fnaa, one of the busiest squares in Africa. Yves Saint Laurent's intimate connection to Marrakech led to the opening of a museum dedicated to his legendary work. The annual Marrakech International Film Festival attracts prominent guests, while museums showcase Moroccan arts, photography, carpets and the Andalusian design that influences the city’s architecture. The historic La Mamounia hotel, opened in 1923, has hosted renowned guests such as Winston Churchill. Vanessa Branson’s El Fenn, a collection of traditional riads, offers a stunning boutique hotel experience. There are countless ways to immerse oneself in the culture of Marrakech, but perhaps the best place to start is with a simple glass of mint tea.

Berenson fell in love with Marrakech eight years ago and, after finding the perfect riad, decided to call it home.
